Gold Star Mothers Lauren Seidler and Janice Chance joined members from the Knights of Columbus Chaplain, Vincent R. Capadanno, Assembly 3162 and other Veteran Service Organization (VSO) volunteers to deliver Christmas gifts to inpatients at the Baltimore Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center. It was truly an Honor to deliver Christmas gifts to some of our nation’s Heroes and to spend time talking with them. Watching their faces light up, and receiving warm hand shakes and hugs was a gift that money cannot buy. Many VSOs which included the Gold Star Mothers Maryland Chapter as well as other individuals donated money which enabled the gifts to be purchased and delivered to patients at all VA Healthcare Centers. We are looking forward to serving our Heroes again next year.

Gold Star Mothers Michelle Murphy and Janice Chance visited our Heroes at the Baltimore VA Medical Center located in downtown Baltimore. They distributed packets of Christmas cards with stamped envelopes to patients to mail to relatives and friends. Fleece scarves and a blanket were also distributed. One of the patients told them that he believed we were sent by God in answer to his prayer. He shared that he was thinking about his wife who was at home in Salisbury Maryland and did not have the means to visit him. Our Hero was so happy and appreciative that he received a Christmas card to mail home to his precious wife. Seeing the smiles on the faces, hearing that we were an answer to prayers, and seeing many other positive responses, are some of the things that make what we do as Gold Star Mothers worth it all. We will continue to fulfill our mission to serve our Veterans, Active Duty service members, their families within our communities. Bottom line is we strive to ” “HONOR THROUGH SERVICE”.

Mrs. Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore States Attorney, was the key note speaker. She delivered a timely message that inspired not only the Honorees, our Gold Star Chapter members, but also others that were in attendance, based on their response during and after her message. During the event, it was reported that our women Veterans have overcome many obstacles and are making continued progress toward their goals. All women Veterans who are at the Center are attending college or specialized training. One woman is scheduled to graduate from a Community College this month. YEAH !! They were all beautifully dressed and some even wore beautiful hats. It was a blessing to be in their presence and to pour out our love on them. It was a Great Event and we are looking forward to continuing our personal support, financial assistance and attending their 3rd Annual Tea event.

In attendance from the Gold Star Mothers Maryland Chapter were Michelle Murphy, Donna Robinson, Mary Wiley, Elsheba Khan, Janice Chance, two Gold Star siblings and three nephews. The Warrior Events organization provided and coordinated the transportation on a very nice and comfortable motor coach. We were served food, beverages, and snacks by the Warrior Events leadership team and members. We were pleasantly surprised when the bus on which we were riding, was met by two Philadelphia police officers and escorted us to the stadium. We all had the pleasure to meet and thank them for escorting us, as well as for their service. Mr. Bender and the the Travis Manion Foundation not only welcomed us to their VIP Tailgate Social, they also provided us with premium seating in the club and suite levels. Additionally, they also provided pre game side line passes, which allowed us to view pre game activities up close. General Joseph Dunford, USMC who was recently appointed as the new Joint Chiefs of Staff, was one of the Heroes that our moms did not expect to meet. It truly was a real serendipitous experience! After the game was over, we once again received a police escort as they opened up a path that enabled our driver to get safely through the traffic jam to the beltway. We were treated with Tender Loving Care (TLC )from the time of our arrival and until we safely arrived back to Baltimore. It was an honor to meet and spend time with our Heroes, their families and to meet so many wonderful people. Special thanks in particular to Mr Bob Saunders, VP Warrior Events, Mrs. Jacqui Sands, Ambassador Warrior Events, Mr. Rob Bender, Director of Advancement Travis Manion Foundation and their team members for their many acts of kindness, which made the day very special.

On December 5, 2015, The Gold Star Maryland Chapter partnered with the Travis Manion Foundation for a special Habitat For Humanity of the Chesapeake Team building service project. Four mothers from the Maryland Chapter – Regina Barnhurst, Lauren Seidler, Elsheba Khan and Janice Chance along with five survivor family members from the Travis Manion Foundation – Amy Looney, Doreen Cappalaere, Pat Cappalaere, Andrea Philips, and Ashley Whitlock worked together as a team on a home located in the McCabe Community located in Baltimore City. We were assigned to do the trim for all of the windows and designated floor boards throughout the home. We learned how to cut the wood trim using a power saw after measuring the windows and walls, apply and nail the trim in place with a nail gun, and apply caulking using a caulking gun. Our construction boss Denise was very patient with us. She was an excellent teacher. We had a lot of fun as we learned and performed our assignments. Thanks to her we were able to complete our assigned task by the end of our shift. It was a blessing to be able to work on a home that one day soon will be occupied by a family who dreamed of owning a home. We are looking forward to working together again on other service projects.

From the time that we arrived up until the end of the cruise, we received “The Royal Treatment”.  Scott, Lynne, their children, team members, the Watermark Staff, and our Surprise Special Guest, “Captain Woody”, expressed their appreciation in numerous ways throughout the cruise. The food was delicious, the service was outstanding, and Captain Woody’s performance as Elvis Presley was GREAT!! He really knew how to get us up and moving! A few brave moms and guests also joined Captain Woody on the dance floor. It was a SPECTACULAR EVENING!!! It was a wonderful event to start off the weekend of events leading up to the Commemoration of “Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day”, which was observed on Sunday, September 27th. It was a blessing to be able to spend time together as a family because we did not have to worry about making anyone uncomfortable. We were free to share about our loved ones and to just have sweet fellowship. We will never be able to thank Truckin4troops, their partners and “Captain Woody” enough for their many acts of Loving Kindness. Before leaving the Yacht, we were given gift bags full of goodies and flowers. We are looking forward to once again volunteering with the Truckin4troops organization as they serve our Heroes.

Our third annual crab feast and bull roast fundraiser was held at the American Legion Post 206 in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. It was a huge success due to the hard work and combined efforts of Lee Ann Doerflinger (Past Chapter President) who served as the fundraiser chair, the committee members, Janice Chance (President & Chaplain), Kelly Swanson, Cindy Lohman, Theresa Mills (Secretary), Mary Wiley (2nd Vice President), Michelle Murphy (1st Vice President), Yvonne Green (Sergeant at Arms), Paula Davis, Elsheba Khan (Treasurer) and the rest of the Maryland Chapter members.

This year marked a significant increase in the number of sponsors due to our networking and volunteer projects. These projects included partnerships with several nonprofit organizations that serve and support veterans and wounded warriors. There were three tiers of sponsors, Gold ($500.00) Silver ($300), and Bronze ($150.00). The Gold tier donors were; Truckin4troops, Steve and Cindy Fogleman, and Mr. William Karlson. Silver tier donors were; The Johanniter organization and Dr Joel Nathanson. Bronze tier donors were; Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, The Columbia Bank and David W. Grooms Insurance Agency, Inc. We were pleasantly surprised by Mark Hoke of Operation Second Chance/No Person Left Behind and wounded warrior Chase Savage who presented us with a poster size check in the sum of $1,550.00. We were also fortunate to work with Mr. Jay Cleaver, the owner of Memories Honored, who created a beautiful slide show of our fallen heroes as a donation to our event. This truly was the highlight of the event and touched the hearts of the Moms and attendees. We would also like to thank DJ Char Lee for providing the music for the event.

The proceeds from this event will be used to help us fulfill our mission of serving and supporting our veterans, active duty service members and their families. It was a wonderful time of food, fun and fellowship. We have received positive feedback, in addition to promises to support and attend our next annual crab feast and bull roast.

Finally, we are very grateful to all our family, friends, members of other veteran support organizations and a special heartfelt thanks to the leadership and members of American Legion Post 206 for their hospitality and generosity. Specifically, they donated the use of the beautiful hall and stage, publicized the event including advertising in the local papers and the electronic reader board; donated beer, sold tickets, provided bartenders, and members who seized every opportunity to help us. The annual crab feast is our only fundraiser and Post 206 was a major contributor to its success.

Ft. Meade Massing of the Colors-05172015

More than 400 people attended the 90-minute event, which celebrates the flag and honors those who have served and continue to serve the country. The grand marshal and keynote speaker was Navy Adm. Michael S. Rogers, commander of U.S. Cyber Command, director of the National Security Agency and chief of the Central Security Service. “We tend to focus on serving, but Memorial Day is a visible reminder that sacrifice is behind that flag,” Rogers said. “… The greatest pain in the world is to lose those closest to us. On behalf of the military, thank you for your willingness to bear that sacrifice. … Thank you for your willingness to be part of something bigger than yourselves.” Many thanks to Admiral Rogers for acknowledging the pain of sacrifice when we lose those close to us, who died in service to our country. It becomes easier to bear when a community comes together to pay homage to that sacrifice. We are grateful for the community at Ft. Meade, Garrison Commander, Col. Foley and Voncile Farmer of Survivor Outreach Services, as they continue to support Gold Star Mother’s and family members.
