U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Memorial Day 250th Year Anniversary of Sacred Sacrifice “They Gave Their Tomorrows” Alexandria, Virginia Thursday, May 21, 2026

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Memorial Day ceremony was held this year at its beautiful new location in Alexandria, Virginia. The Gold Star Mothers Maryland Chapter attended and volunteered at this meaningful memorial program.

Gold Star Mothers Joy Goode, Stephanie White, and Basmatti Bishundat, along with Gold Star Spouse President Danielle Charles, participated in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Joy Goode shared the story of her son, FT2 SS Keon Askew, who gave his tomorrow through his ultimate sacrifice. Danielle Charles spoke about her husband, Senior Airman Gilnord Charles, who also gave his tomorrow in service to our country. Magda Brown, a Gold Star Daughter, shared the story of her father, who gave his tomorrow. He passed away when she was only six years old. Many years later, his remains were identified through dental records, bringing long-awaited answers to her family.

This ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the courage, love, and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes and the families who carry their legacy.
