Gold Star Mother’s Day was designated by Congress on June 23, 1936, to be observed on the last Sunday in September. In 2011, President Barack Obama expanded the observance by presidential proclamation to explicitly recognize the entire Gold Star family, establishing Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. Each year, President Obama issued a national proclamation calling on government officials to display the U.S. flag over federal buildings and encouraging Americans to hold ceremonies honoring fallen service members and their families. This year, the Baltimore City Veterans Commission, chaired by Dr. Adobolia Buford, and the Baltimore City Women’s Commission, led by Interim Chief Jasmine Gibson, hosted Gold Star mothers Janice Chance and Yvonne for a ceremony of remembrance and honor. Ms. Gibson also presented the Gold Star Mothers with a proclamation from Baltimore City’s Mayor, Brandon Scott. The Baltimore City Fire Department presented the colors and laid the wreath. It was a cold, windy, and rainy day but liquid sunshine prevailed in the hearts of the attendees and guests.
