Maryland lost a valuable, respectable and honorable servant to our State, Veterans and community. George W. Owings, III, “George”, as everyone knew him, served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs from 2004 to 2007 and from 2015 to 2023. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in District 29A and District 27B from 1988 to 2004. Appointed by four Maryland Governors as a government official, you would never know that he was a politician. George served in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant during the Vietnam War and his decorations and medals include the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation with Bronze Star Device, Navy and Marine Corps Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star Device.
He was a huge supporter of Gold Star families. Thanks to Mr. Owings involvement and advocacy, the placement of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Annapolis Maryland was finished in record time. Maryland Gold Star Mothers will always remember him as a constant supporter for Gold Star Mothers, Veterans and Veterans Service Organizations.
Maryland Gold Star Mothers, Janice Chance, Donna Robinson and Theresa Karlson attended the ceremony, where many dignitaries, fellow Veterans, family and friends shared wonderful stories about our faithful servant. Job well done Marine. May you rest in peace.
