Our own Maryland Gold Star Mother Stephanie White was honored and celebrated at her local American Legion Post 259, where she is also a member. Many dignitaries, friends and family attended to honor and thank Stephanie for her selfless service. Not only is she a Gold Star Mother, she is also a Vietnam War Era Veteran. The ceremony began with Stephanie lighting a candle in memory of her son, PFC Robert L. White, US Army. Helen Smith, Commander of AL Post 259 welcomed the group and introduced special guests including Brigadier General Janeen Birckhead, the Adjutant General of the Maryland National Guard and Veterans Affairs Officer, Dr. James A. Dula, Major, USAF, retired, liaison to the County Executive for Prince George’s County. BG Birckhead was the keynote speaker. Not only did Stephanie receive a special citation from the County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, but she also received a beautiful handmade quilt by Maxine Morgan of the Uhuru Quilters Guild. At the end of the ceremony everyone enjoyed a delicious meal provided by AL Post 259. Janice Chance, President of the Maryland Chapter shared a written congratulations in the program as she was not able to attend the ceremony. Past President Kelly Swanson spoke on behalf of the Chapter and shared Stephanie’s volunteer support that truly exemplifies MD Gold Star Mothers’ mission to continue our children’s legacies by serving. Maryland Gold Star Mothers Theresa Karlson, Basmattie Bishundat, Kelly Swanson, Joy Goode, Gold Star Dad Greg Goode and Gold Star sibling Jenine Melton, along with Alexandria VA Chapter member Christine Stoddard were in attendance and enjoyed meeting Stephanie’s Veteran friends and family members.
