On Saturday, February 18, Maryland Gold Star Mothers, Basmattie Bishundat, Janice Chance, Paula Davis, Sheba Khan, and Donna Robinson were blessed to make their third visit on the last day of the National Salute to Veterans week. The moms were joined by James Hilton, Army Vietnam Veteran, and special guest PenFed Foundation, CSM (Ret) David Clark, Vice President PenFed Foundation, and his team member Ms. Katie Watson, Program Manager, Military Heroes to assist with the distribution of gifts to hospitalized veterans at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center Baltimore Greene Street location. VA Volunteer and Army Vietnam Veteran Mr. Harold Crawley served as the group’s guide and escort.
During the visit, the Gold Star Moms and PenFed Foundation team members distributed gift bags, filled with items including a Valentines teddy bear, toiletries bags and Valentine’s Day cards handmade by local school children at the Georgetown Visitation School (Washington, DC). During the visit, our heroes were thanked for their selfless service and sacrifice to our country. The Moms also rendered to some of the heroes what they lovingly refer to as their “Gold Star Mothers Hand Salute” which resulted in smiles and they responded by also rendering a hand salute. As we presented the items to each veteran, we had the opportunity to talk to them and thank them for their service. Veteran, PenFed member David Clark, CSM(R), had the chance to chat and shared memories and stories with Veterans. They all thanked us and from the smiles all around, we could tell they truly appreciated our visit. The Moms were honored to have the opportunity to salute the Veterans.
Patients and staff expressed their appreciation to all the volunteers. The moms are looking forward to continuing to serve and support our Heroes and their families. The moms left with their hearts filled with Joy. They expressed their appreciation and thanks to Mr. Crawley for serving as their leader/escort, and Mr. Clark and Ms. Watson for assisting the Maryland Chapter members to continue their mission of honoring through service and supporting our Heroes. The moms are determined to continue the Legacy of their Children’s Service. #honorthroughservice
