The National Salute to Veteran Patients takes place during the week of February 14 every year. This year, it takes place from February 12 to 18. The purpose of the holiday is to honor and pay tribute to the brave military veterans who receive medical care at Veterans Affairs (V.A.) medical facilities. The holiday also seeks to create more awareness about the importance of these centers and encourage more people to visit and volunteer.
On Monday, February 13th, Maryland Chapter Gold Star Mothers Rosemarie Ceo, Janice Chance, Paula Davis and Donna Robinson along with Commandant Earl Ruff Jr and Marian James – Senior Vice Commandant Marine Corps League Baltimore Detachment 565, shared LOVE to our wounded warriors at the VA Hospital in Loch Raven, Maryland. During the visit, the Moms distributed gift bags to the veterans filled with items, including a teddy bear and Valentine’s Day card handmade by local school children. The Marine Corps league members distributed handmade Afghans that were made by Marian James to veterans along with a Valentine’s Day card. One Veteran was so happy he started singing and the group sung along with him! Their expressions of thanks and the smiles on their faces have been indelibly etched in our hearts and minds.
During the visit, our heroes and family members were thanked for their selfless service and sacrifice to our country. The Moms also rendered to some of the heroes what they lovingly refer to as their “Gold Star Mothers Hand Salute” which resulted in smiles and responded by also rendering a hand salute. The Marines assisted with the healthcare staff and other employees were also thanked for the service that they provide to our Heroes. The Maryland Chapter Moms are looking forward to continuing to serve and support our Heroes. We continue the Legacy of our Children’s Service. We Honor through Service.
