On September 29th, the American Gold Star Mothers Inc. (AGSM) organization held their 88th Wreath Laying and Commemoration Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
A beautiful wreath was laid at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier by AGSM’s President, Patti Elliott as she was accompanied by her son, Brad. After the wreath laying ceremony, attendees were invited in the Amphitheater for the Commemoration Ceremony. The ceremony began with a rendition from the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” brass quintet. Immediately following the processional of the National Executive Board, the ceremony began with the presentation of colors, national anthem, and the pledge of allegiance. As a ceremonial tradition, the National Secretary for AGSM, Theresa Karlson, read the Proclamation as declared by the President of the United States and as approved by Congress on June 23, 1936. Patti welcomed all the guests and dignitaries before she introduced the keynote speaker, General Charles Q. Brown, Jr., the 21st Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Maryland Chapter Moms in attendance were Janice Chance and Theresa Karlson as well as Wilmington Chapter President, Donna Lowell. Also in attendance were Gold Star Mothers and family members from various states, senior military leaders, members of various veteran service organizations, and other supporters.
