On February 9, Maryland Gold Star Mothers Janice Chance, Paula Davis, and Theresa Karlson represented the Maryland Chapter at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
The moms distributed thoughtfully prepared gift bags filled with:
- A small Valentine stuffed teddy bear
- Word Search books
- Pencils
- Lip balm
- Lotion
- Handmade Valentine’s Day cards created by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 60, in Laurel, Maryland.
As each bag was presented, the moms rendered what they lovingly call their “Gold Star Mothers Hand Salute.” The Veterans responded with smiles — and often a returning salute — creating moments of mutual respect and heartfelt connection.
On February 10, Janice Chance and Theresa Karlson represented the Maryland Chapter at the Loch Raven VA Medical Center. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the moms were unable to visit the Veterans in person; however, they ensured that the gift bags were delivered to the Medical Center so the Veterans would still receive a special Valentine’s Day surprise.
On February 12, Janice Chance, Paula Davis, and Theresa Karlson visited Veteran patients at Perry Point VA Medical Center.
During visits at all three centers, the mothers shared their signature Hand Salute and heartfelt words of gratitude. As gift bags were distributed, Veterans smiled warmly and expressed their thanks. The moms wished each Veteran a Happy Valentine’s Day and thanked them for their service to our nation. At one visit, the group was even serenaded by a Veteran — a touching and unforgettable moment. As conversations unfolded, Veterans shared stories of their service, their sacrifices, and their pride. The healthcare staff at each facility was also sincerely thanked for the compassionate care they provide to our nation’s heroes.
The expressions of gratitude and the smiles on the faces of our Heroes have been indelibly etched in the hearts and minds of the Maryland Chapter Moms. The Maryland Chapter looks forward to continuing to serve and support our Heroes and their families. We continue the legacy of our children’s service by honoring it through service.
